The kitten cowered, hissing and spitting with terror in the corner of the carton. Harriet wasted no time arguing with it. She closed her accurate, gentle jaws right on the nape of the kitten’s neck, picked it up, and ran across the beams to the window. She flew out, the kitten dangling between her jaws, just as the destroyer struck again. The whole building shook and tottered, and the floors fell.

Above her James circled, calling, “This way, Harriet!”

She followed him blindly through the dust cloud.

Down in the alley, the crane operator looked up into the dust and blinked several times. “Birds,” he said. “They had to be birds,”

Later on, eating a ham sandwich out of his tin lunch box, he asked his friend who was sitting on the same heap of bricks, “Did you ever see a bird that had whiskers? And front feet?”

“Nope,” said the other man. “Can’t say I ever did. Want a dill pickle?”
